Xi'an, located in west China, is historical city with splendid culture and famous for the terra-cotta warriors, even though with such an impotance in location, Xian is still NOT a beginning station of Tibet trains,  which is different from Beijing-Lhasa Train or Shanghai-Lhasa Train. Instead that the Xian-Lhasa train is set as a middle section of Guangzhou-Lhasa train and Shanghai-Lhasa rain.

Difficulty of  Booking Xian to Lhasa Train 

Currently, there are only 3 trains stopover in Xian and enroute to Lhasa, these train are train Z264 from Guangzhou to Lhasa, train Z164 from Shanghai to Lhasa. Since there is no direct train from Xian to Lhasa, so the ticket booking of Xian-Lhasa train is always a difficulty and the tickets are hard to guarantee. As experts of China & Tibet travel industry, we do NOT recommend tourists to travel from Xian to Lhasa by train, especially between May to October. 

Backup Plan When Xian-Lhasa Train is Unavailable

If you want to travel by train from Xian to Lhasa, we can try to book the ticket for you, but it is not guaranteed, and you'd better have the backup plan---such as take flight from Xian to Lhasa if the tickets are not available.

If you want to take train to Lhasa, and do not want long train ride as those 3 days (2nights) trains from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing or Chengdu to Lhasa,  you can consider to take a flight to Xining first, Xining is the capital of Qinghai province, and the start point of Qinghai-Tibet railway, then stay 1-2 nights in Xinning (2200m) for acclimatization and sigthseeing, to visit the Ta'er Monastery and Qinghai Lake, then take a afternoon train from Xining to Lhasa, it is 1 night on the train and arrives Lhasa in next day afternoon.  This type of Xining to Lhasa train is shorter train ride, and allows you to see the amazing highland views along Qinghai-Tibet railway. By take Xining-Lhasa train, we will send you the Tibet Travel Permit by email around 5-10 days beforehand, which you need to print out twice for the train boarding.

How to get to Xi'an Railway Station

Address : Xi'an, Xincheng, North Ring Road East Section

Distance from Airport: 37km, 30 minutes

Bus to There: No. 6, No. 46, No. 41, No.611 etc

Metro: Line 4 of Xi'an Metro will serve it. Now the nearest subway service is No.1 which is 600km away from the railway station.

Xi'an Airport to Xi'an Railway Station:  About 50 minutes taxi ride.  You may also take airport shuttle bust Line 2 to the Jiefang hotel (about 1 hour if traffic is good), then walk to the Xi'an train station. The shuttle bus runs from 07:50AM to 20:20PM, with a cost of RMB26 per person.
